3 Ways to Boost Your Career Today

3 Ways to Boost Your Career Today

You are in charge of your career. What have you done for your career lately? If we are not actively looking for a job, many of us are not doing much for our career. Typically, we forget about things like updating our resume, learning new skills, building our brand and even networking. We just breathe a sigh of relief that we are working and leave well enough alone. While that may be easy, it may not be the most productive route for your career. Chances are, you won’t be in your current job forever, so it’s best to always keep things active when it comes to your career.

If you’re in that career coasting mode right now; snap out of it. Start today, by trying these 3 tasks:

  1. Get a mentor. Find someone you respect and is respected in their profession that will help you elevate your career. A good mentor listens, gives feedback, provides inspiration, uses personal experiences as examples and helps the mentee avoid making mistakes. Mentors can help you and your career in a variety of ways. As you start working with your mentor you both can figure out how the partnership will progress and what each of you hope to get out of it. This could include things like making a career plan, setting goals, identifying resources and more.
  2. Get social. Your most likely already have a number of social media/networking profiles out there, but what are you doing with them? You could be using them to build your personal brand. Start by commenting on topical posts, sharing relevant articles or item you have written. Anywhere you can add value by providing an opinion or resource can help others see you as an expert in your field. Eventually, people will take notice.
  3. Get organized. This sounds like a big task, but it’s not. Basically, work on keeping all your career and job search information updated and at the ready. I’m talking about things like updating your resume and online job profile when you get a new role, complete a project, take new training, etc. Or, by keeping your networking contact list current and adding new contacts as you meet them. Stay on top of things instead of having things build up causing more work later. Plus, you will always be ready for new opportunities should something pop up.

Remember, you are in charge of your own career and success. Don’t let it sit still. Keep things moving by building on these 3 simple tasks and doing something every day for your career.
